Flaxseeds: Powerful Support for Cancer and the Whole-Body Health

In the fifth century B.C. Hippocrates recommended flax as an emollient; “making soft; soothing especially to the skin and mucous membranes.” Today we know flax offers a large array of health benefits, especially for Cancer prevention and treatment, but also to keep the whole body healthy from our brain to keeping the skin soft on our toes!

Flax:

  • Lubricates the digestive tract, regenerates the intestinal flora and heals harmed digestive mucosa, thus regulating the fermentation processes and making the stool softer and less odorous.

  • Has an anti-inflammatory properties and is beneficial for gastritis, duodenitis, and gastro-duodenal ulcers soothing the mucosa.

  • Is especially helpful with asthma, bronchitis, and cystitis.

  • As well as autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and other joint health challenges,

  • And skin health, including psoriasis, improving skin hydration and elasticity, while reducing dryness and irritation.

  • Can help relieve depression and improve mental functions due to its high content of omega-3 fatty acids (flax has the highest concentration of omega-3 fatty acids in nature).

  • Can help reduce cholesterol and triglycerides due to its high fiber content and unsaturated fatty acids and improve blood vessel function.

  • Can block the body’s from forming carcinogens (cancerous cells), shrink existing breast and colon tumors and stops new tumors from forming.

  • Can help relieve severe menstrual cramps, shrink fibroids and cysts.

  • Enhances absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K.

  • Whole flaxseeds or freshly ground flaxseeds can work as a laxative to relieve constipation.

Flaxseeds may be tiny, but as you can see, they carry an impressive nutritional profile that has earned them attention in both wellness and research communities. Rich in lignans, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids (specifically alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA), flaxseed offers a range of potential health benefits, from supporting hormonal balance to promoting heart and digestive health to preventing and treating cancer. Let’s dig deeper!

Let’s Expound Upon Why Flaxseed is so Important for Cancer Prevention and as Part of a Cancer Treatment Plan:

1. Hormone-Related Cancer Support

Flaxseed is one of the richest dietary sources of lignans, (lignans are plant compounds that may help balance estrogen levels). This is particularly important because hormonal imbalance has been linked to certain cancers, including breast and prostate cancer. While research is ongoing, lignans may offer a protective effect in these contexts.

2. Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Chronic inflammation is a known contributor to many diseases, including cancer progression. The omega-3 fatty acids and other compounds in flaxseed help reduce inflammation throughout the body, supporting long-term health and cancer prevention.

3. Slow Tumor Growth

Studies suggest flaxseed can play a role in slowing tumor growth.

4. Gut Health Support

Flaxseed is high in dietary fiber, which nourishes beneficial gut bacteria and supports a healthy microbiome. A balanced gut is increasingly recognized as essential for immune function and may influence cancer risk and overall wellness.

How to Use Flaxseed Effectively

For best absorption, freshly ground flaxseed is recommended over whole seeds. However, whole seeds can be beneficial for relieving constipation.

Suggested intake:

  • 1 teaspoon to 2 Tablespoons at each meal.

  • Add to smoothies, hot cereals, plant-based yogurt, salads, or mix with nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter, etc.) and spread on bread.

  • Add to bread mixes and other baked goods before baking them.

Important considerations:

  • Consult your healthcare provider if you take blood thinners, as flaxseed is also a natural blood thinner.

  • Stay hydrated and active to avoid constipation from the increased fiber from adding flaxseed to your diet.

  • Storage: Store whole or ground flaxseeds in the freezer to keep the fat stable (to avoid rancidity).

  • Some individuals find flaxseed oil easier to tolerate than ground flaxseeds.

Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil offers similar benefits, however, it differs from whole flaxseed in that it does not contain fiber or lignans.

Flaxseed oil tips?

  • Heat-sensitive: Do not cook with flaxseed oil; use it in cold dishes like salads or smoothies.

  • Storage: Store in the refrigerator to prevent rancidity.

  • Shelf life: Use relatively quickly after opening.

Incorporating flaxseed or flax oil into your routine can be a simple yet impactful way to support overall health.
