From Intention to Accomplishment: The Power of Accountability

John stood on the bathroom scale and sighed. He had made this decision before.
“This time I’m going to do it.”

He knew what he wanted. He wanted more energy, better health, and greater strength, and lower weight was going to be the sign he was moving in the right direction.
He knew some of the changes he needed to make. But knowing what to do had never been his greatest problem. Sticking with it was the difficult part.
Like many of us, John had discovered that beginning is often easier than continuing.
Life gets busy. We become discouraged because progress seems slow.
Real and last change takes time.
However, small positive, healthy choices, repeated consistently, produce significant change.
One of those small positive, healthy choices is Accountability.

Accountability
One of the most effective ways to persevere and stay the course is to report in. Telling someone what you are doing and what you want to do helps you stay on track, stick to your intentions, keeps you honest, and keeps you persevering to reach the next step.
Accountability turns a private intention into a commitment when you establish a regular routine of reporting in.
I was at a dinner with friends the other evening. At the very beginning of our time together, I let them know I was looking forward to visiting with them but was not going to eat, and I explained why.
Because I had stated my intention and the reasons for it, no one tried to twist my arm to tried to get me to eat nor did they even offer me food. We had a nice conversation and I enjoyed my water while they enjoyed their food.

If I had not stated my intention and the reasons for it, the others would have naturally tried to persuade me to eat. But stating the intention, helped me stick with my intention and simply focus on the conversation. It also helped everyone else be comfortable with me not eating.
Stating our intention and sharing the why, will help us stay accountable to do what we have just heard ourselves clearly state and everyone else is expecting us to carry through with the intention as well.
When sharing with your accountability partner, you can share:
What you accomplished in the last day or two.
What has gone well.
Where you struggled.
What obstacles you encountered.
What adjustments you made, or can make next time, for better success.
What is your next step to focus on?
Accountability is not about shame or condemnation. It is about encouragement, honesty, and responsibility.
Ecclesiastes reminds us: “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.” Ecclesiastes 4:9.

Sometimes we simply need someone to say, “Keep going. You can do this with God’s help.”

John had changed.
He had learned to make one decision at a time.
He had stopped expecting perfection and started practicing perseverance with patience, and He experienced progression.
PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION

John tapped into the group chat multiple times a week. This helped him when he got derailed, to get back on track and continue to journey to the finish line.
John discovered something very important:
Success wasn't one giant decision. It was hundreds of small decisions made consistently.
