Garlic and Cancer

Garlic is very beneficial in supporting overall health through improving the immune system functioning due to its sulfur compounds, like allicin. Allicin has been studied extensively for its anticancer effects.
Some studies link higher garlic intake with lower rates of stomach, colorectal, prostate and breast cancer. Garlic helps neutralize free radicals that can damage cells and enhances the body’s natural defenses against abnormal cells.
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules in your body that have unpaired electrons.
You can think of free radical like a molecule missing an important puzzle piece; they want to fill the space, so they start grabbing any unpaired puzzle pieces from anywhere, even if it breaks something else to get it. We want to stop free radical damage to your cells, especially DNA mutations which are linked to cancer. When Free radicals overwhelm your body’s defenses, it results in what is often referred to as oxidative stress. Your body uses antioxidants, such as those found in garlic to neutralize free radicals by donating electrons (the missing puzzle piece) safely.
Lab results from cell and animal studies, reveal how garlic compounds can inhibit cancer cell growth and promote cancer cell death (apoptosis) through activation of liver enzymes involved in detoxification and garlic helps support decongesting our liver, our detoxification manager.

Garlic naturally helps fight bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These can often be at the root of the formation and growth of cancer.
Garlic also supports gut and microbiome balance due to its ability to fight the bad bacteria but retains the good microbes. Maintaining a good microbiome balance is essential for healing from cancer (more on that in a future blog).
Cancer, in a simplistic definition, is often the result of poor blood circulation. Garlic improves circulation and reduces inflammation and therefore can help regulate blood pressure and cholesterol, and blood glucose levels; complications often associated with diseases of poor blood circulation.
How to Use Garlic
Fresh: crushed garlic adds a strong, savory depth to your food that can reduce the need for excess salt—helping keep sodium intake low. (Simple word of caution: some people find garlic hard to digest. Try a small amount and gradually increase or try steamed garlic which will be easier to digest.)
Steamed: Steaming garlic for 2 minutes reduces its “bite” and strong odor, but does affect the allicin. This can be a beneficial way to increase garlic in your diet. (See recipe below).
Use in soup, stir-fries, and other savory dishes: to maximize the benefits add 1-3 minutes before serving.
