Temperance: A Key Element to Health


We are one week into the New Year – 2026!


Some of you are ready to create “A New YOU” for the “New Year”.


There is one Key Element necessary for your success of the “New You” to emerge. What is that one Key Element? Temperance.


What is Temperance? The basic definition of temperance is avoiding that which is harmful and using in moderation that which is good.


Whether you are trying to lose weight, increase muscle mass, reverse or prevent disease, reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol, glucose, or blood pressure, temperance is going to be at the heart of your success. We can’t expect the “New You” to emerge without change. But it takes temperance to stick to change and make it a habit.


Temperance touches every aspect of our lives.

  • Temperance is having work-life balance

  • Temperance is going to bed according to the body’s natural rhythm

  • Temperance is doing those things that are good for your health, and not those things that are bad or even good and bad at the same time

  • Temperance is not doing things in excess

  • Temperance is eating the right foods, at the right time

  • Temperance is eating the right amount of food and not overeating

  • Temperance is cooperating with God to have Godly control and balance


Temperance doesn’t only apply to food, drink and addictive substances but is applicable and needful in every life situation.


Humanity lost temperance when Adam and Eve partook of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. That intemperate act spiraled our race into the enemy’s net of deception and woe. But Jesus came to empower us to cooperate with Him to regain Godly control and temperance, through His Spirit (Genesis 3:15; John 10:10; Galatians 5:22-23).


Temperance is getting outside in the sunshine, morning, midday, and evening, to help the body set the circadian rhythms appropriately.


Temperance is drinking enough water during the day, flushing out toxins throughout the day so the body does not have to work as hard at night to detoxify.


Temperance is choosing to eat God’s prescribed foods (plants in their natural state), eating an appropriate amount (approximately four cups of food, give or take a cup), at the right times.


Temperance is going to bed according to the body’s natural rhythm. Going to bed at the same time each night and being asleep before 10 pm will help us have better quality sleep.


Temperance is avoiding stimulants that alter brain function and chemistry.


Tobacco inhalation slows blood circulation and decreases oxygen to the cells including brain cells. This in turn suppresses the body’s immune system.


Alcohol affects liver function so the liver cannot detox easily. The body’s immune system is then focused on cleansing the liver of toxins, rather than building up the rest of the body. If the liver is backed up and bogged down with daily toxic exposures, it is less able to help you with allergic reactions and too much histamine in the body.


Caffeine suppresses the body’s initial histamine response which suppresses the body’s allergic reaction initially. That sounds like a good thing, but unfortunately it eventually causes the immune system to weaken due to inactivity, causing allergies reaction to be worse. Caffeine also restricts blood flow to the brain. This kicks the adrenals into high gear to deal with “the emergency” of blood flow restriction to our mother board and can lead to adrenal fatigue; leading to tiredness, trouble sleeping, difficult waking up, brain fog, mood swings, food cravings, poor stress management, weakened immune system, low energy, blood pressure and weight challenges.


Sugar greatly reduces the body’s blood circulation (due to thickening the blood), negatively excites the brain (reduces focus, increases fatigue), and suppresses the immune system. Just a few teaspoons of sugar each day suppresses the immune system from working properly.


Effects of Intemperance on our Health:

  • Refined fructose (sodas) consumption is associated with elevated Blood Pressure

  • Caffeine decreases the body’s insulin sensitivity (increases insulin resistance)

  • Sugar consumption raises cholesterol levels

  • Sugar intake is directly linked with Heart Disease mortality

  • Alcohol consumption is linked to increase in obesity

  • Overworking negatively affects physical and mental health

  • Sugar increases inflammation and autoimmune flare ups

  • And the list can go on and on…
