“The concept that Western diseases are lifestyle-related and therefore potentially preventable and reversible is the most important medical discovery of the twentieth century.”
Dennis Burkitt, MD, England, Discoverer of Burkitt’s Lymphoma
What is Lifestyle Medicine?
Lifestyle Medicine uses evidence-based lifestyle therapeutic approaches to prevent, treat and oftentimes reverse lifestyle-related chronic disease. Lifestyle Medicine is a unique clinical approach to apply medical, behavior, motivational and environmental principles that promote a healthy diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, emotional well-being, positive psychology and connectedness, avoidance of risky substances and use of other non-drug modalities for the purpose of promoting health and preventing or treating disease.
Lifestyle Medicine aims at treating the cause of most of our modern diseases with the strongest evidence-based modalities available. Lifestyle changes are a part of the cure and are prescribed as the first line and most important therapy for disease treatment and reversal. Making changes cannot just be prescribed, it also requires patient engagement and responsibility for treatment outcomes. The provider acts as both medical expert and coach.
With Lifestyle Medicine, treatment revolves around patient self-care and self-management elements. Therefore, the patient is involved in the decisions and treatment prescribed and changes are made according to what the patient’s goals are and at a pace the patient feels is achievable.
The major goal of Lifestyle Medicine is to reduce symptoms and complications of disease, control chronic disease and if possible, achieve disease reversal through addressing the root cause(s) of the problem.
What is Disease Reversal?
Disease Reversal means that all laboratory markers or diagnostic tests of a disease are within normal range without current use of any medications and no presence of signs or symptoms of the disease.
What is Controlled Chronic Disease?
Controlled Chronic Disease is improvement in laboratory markers and diagnostic testing to accepted standard levels but without complete normalization of laboratory markers or diagnostic testing.
“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” – Thomas Edison
