Why is This SO Hard?

Question: Before I joined your program I ate whatever and didn’t think very much about food. Now I think about food with every meal. I choose to eat foods that heal but seem to be bombarded with thoughts and desires to eat everything that is not good for me. Why is this SO hard?

That is a very good and important question.

You are becoming acquainted with yourself. You have set yourself to be a learner of what is good and right and to cooperate with the Creator in His restorative work by taking care of your body, His temple, and to preserve it in the very best condition of health. You are choosing to eat those things which will be for your very best health to make the most healthful quality of blood that can freely circulate, nourish, and heal. You have chosen to cultivate wisdom in being a faithful guardian of your body by placing yourself under the doctors God has provided – pure air and water, the healing, precious sunlight, proper nutrition, exercise, rest and sleep, elevating thoughts and thinking patterns with an attitude of gratitude, developing loving and trusting relationships with God and your fellowman.

Before you joined the Start a New YOU!® Program, you were frequently sick, could hardly move without pain, experienced daily brain fog and fatigue to the point that it was a mountain of effort just to get out of bed and take a shower. After which, you stated, you were ready to go back to bed. There was no energy to cook, so you ate “whatever” and didn’t think much about what you were putting in your body or the effects it was having on your body.

Now you feel so much better, the brain fog is gone, you have energy to prepare healthy foods and are doing so, and you are reaping the benefits of a better existence. So why the call back to the old foods that did not serve you well?

Our brains are easily excitable and over the decades of our existence we have cultivated perverted appetites and tastes and the mind and tastebuds have become accustomed to unwholesome (addictive) foods. Our brains associate those excitable foods with pleasure, specialness and treats. When we withhold these foods (usually high sugar, high fat foods) we may experience feelings of deprivation and even resentment.

But the real issue at stake is at who’s table will I dine?

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” If we can embrace the concept of 1 Corinthians 10:31, that eating and drinking is an opportunity to glorify, that is worship, God, then every meal is a worship experience and Jesus is our Guest.

Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup [eat] with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20.

Jesus further tells us, “The thief [satan] cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I [Jesus] am come that they may have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10.

God has a wonderfully, abundant plan for your life to prosper and to be in health (3 John 2). And your health will be a witness to the power of God (Psalm 67:1-2 KJV) Who wants to be the very health of your countenance (Psalm 42:11; 43:5). But on the other hand, the enemy is doing everything he can steal that away from you and coerce you into eat what you do not want and what will make you hurt and feel awful again.

And so it has been from the beginning (see Genesis 3) when the enemy deceived Eve into thinking what God said “don’t eat” meant that He was somehow withholding something good from her. That is the philosophical foundation for feelings of deprivation and resentment. The false “something good” sent our world into a tailspin of being controlled by appetite and tastebuds. This was the first sin and every generation after has had to battle the tongue and appetite. The battle is real and it is fierce.

But be of good cheer for the battle belongs to the Lord and He has overcome and gotten the victory (Matthew 4). His victory is our victory: “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them [evil spirits], because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4.

God’s plan is simple and leads to the tree of life (Proverbs 15:4; 21:23), but the lure of the enemy is deceitful and leads to death (Proverbs 23:1-3; James 1:26; 3:6, 8).

The battle is real; it must be fought every day and at every meal, for we have inherited a perverted appetite.

But we can do all things through Jesus Christ Who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). It all comes down to a matter of choice. God sets before us life and death (Deuteronomy 30:19) and then He encourages us: “Choose Life!”

Continue to choose the good and refuse the evil (Isaiah 7:15).

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” Revelation 2:7.

Over time, your new habits will become your norm because you have starved out the devil.
