This month we have been focusing on Spiritual Health. Therefore, I thought it apropos to conclude this month’s blogs with the eternal healing found in Romans, often called the Roman Road to Salvation. Join me as we walk through the Gospel in Romans.

The Word Gospel is defined in Romans 1:16 as “the Power of God unto Salvation, to everyone that believeth.” And Gospel is also defined in the dictionary as “Good news.”

How is the Power of God unto Salvation such Good News? To understand the Good News, we first need to understand the bad news.

Romans 3:23 tells us, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

You may be asking, “How did I sin?”

Romans 5:12: “Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin enter into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

After Adam sinned (see Genesis 3), he could only pass on to his offspring what he currently had, which was his fallen sinful state. But though we are born into sin, God Himself provided the Remedy for sin through His dear Son, Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Sin results in death, that is eternal separation from God. But God, Who is our life (Colossians 3:4), offers to exchange our sin and death for His life and righteousness.

How do we know what is sin?

Romans 7:7: “I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.”

The law points out our sin, but the law cannot fix our sin, it can only condemn us. What law says, “Thou shalt not covet”? The Ten Commandment Law (Exodus 20:17).

Romans 7:10-13 “And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me, Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.”

Sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:1-2), and we stand guilty of breaking His law. But when we accept the gift of Christ, His life and righteousness, in exchange for our death sentence and wickedness, we are set free from death and eternal separation from God.

Romans 8:1-2: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

When we accept Jesus’ gift of life in exchange for our death sentence, Jesus begins a transformation process, changing our hearts and minds to follow in the channel of righteousness; to begin having His thoughts and ways (His law) govern us, leading us to life and health, instead of sin leading us to disease and death.

Romans 10:9 gives us the simplicity of the Gospel: “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him [Jesus] from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

This is not just a once in a lifetime, but a daily surrender (1 Corinthians 15:31).

Romans 12:1-2: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Day by day, we surrender ourselves to God and His ways. As we do this we are growing up into Christ (Ephesians 4:15), becoming just like Him (1 John 3:1-6). As we behold Christ, the lure of sin has less and less power over us; as we cooperate with Christ, we shut the door to sin. (See also Romans 13:14).

Do you acknowledge you are a sinner in need of a Saviour?

Do you believe God has forgiven you of all your sins and do you desire to accept the gift of eternal life with God?

Are you ready to cooperate with God, allowing Him to transform you from sinner into righteousness through Jesus Christ our LORD?
