In Parts One, Two, and Three, we witnessed Marty's remarkable journey to improved health through proper hydration, a plant-based diet, and regular exercise. Today, in Part Four, we will explore the crucial role that proper sleep played in Marty's transformation.
Understanding the Importance of Quality Sleep:
When I met Marty, he was eating late and staying up late and waking up groggy. It was evident that he was lacking quality sleep, which is essential for our bodies to restore, cleanse, detoxify, and reenergize. However, these restorative processes can only occur when the mind and body are relaxed. If the body is busy digesting a heavy meal, that will take precedence over restoration. If we are busy up to the very point our head hits the pillow, the mind will need to unwind before restoration can take place.
God has given us a nightly sunset, with red and orange hues for relaxation. We can take this sign as an indicator to start an unwinding relaxation process. Turning off electronics and taking a stroll, having a meaningful conversation with our spouse, friend, or God in the evening can help us unwind and prepare us for restorative rest.
The hours before midnight have been shown to be twice as restful as those after midnight. Around 2-3 am, the restoration process is finished, and the wake-up process begins. Whether you consider yourself a “morning person” or a “night owl” our physiology and circadian rhythms are the same. Getting to bed around 9 pm with an empty stomach would be ideal and in our Start a New YOU!® Program we will show you how to move your bedtime closer to the ideal.
Harnessing the Power of Natural Physiology and Circadian Rhythms:
To optimize his sleep, Marty started cooperating with natural physiology and circadian rhythms. He adopted the practice of eating a light supper to ensure proper digestion before bedtime. By disconnecting from electronics, taking a leisurely stroll, engaging in meaningful conversations, Marty prepared himself for restorative rest. His target for bedtime was between 9:30-10 pm with a wake-up time around 6 am.
The Benefits of a Consistent Sleep Schedule:
As Marty began cooperating with natural physiology, he noticed remarkable improvements in his daily life; he experienced sustained energy throughout the day and his overall schedule flowed more smoothly. Though he initially found it challenging to wake up in the morning, he eventually no longer relied on an alarm clock to wake him up. His body had established a consistent circadian rhythm.
A Love Story
All perfect stories include a love story, right?
I originally met Marty at church, and we were immediately magnetized! I quickly observed and appreciated his sense of humor. I learned he worked in the building next to the hospital and so we often enjoyed a break from work, having lunch together. We shared a passion for the great outdoors and a passion to understand nutrition and physiology. Marty enjoyed reading my nutrition journals and I discovered he retained the information better than I did!
Marty soon asked me out on a date, and I accepted. Two years later we were married. That was 23 years ago.
